What is prewriting?

Imagen
Prewriting is the first stage of the writing process, some taks that this process involves are choosing a topic and identifying a purpose and an audience. Your guidance gives struggling writers the direction they need to begin generating ideas. Often the hardest part of developing a thesis and writing an effective paper is simply getting started. To help yourself formulate and organize ideas, a writer should try pre-writing. Pre-writing is a group of various methods that can help a writer get ideas down on a paper as they think of them, as well as helping the writer approach topics from different perspectives. The purpose of pre-writing is not to ensure everything is said with the exactly right words or in precise academic language.Pre-writing can help spark creativity, draw unexpected connections, and offer an unrestricted, comfortable space to build confidence with writing.  http://writing2.richmond.edu/writing/wweb/prewriting.html   Spiderscribe  is a useful site for w...

Freewriting

Imagen
Freewriting Freewriting is one of our Consultants' favorite techniques for helping writers who cannot get started. Freewriting is analogous to the warm up you might do before exercising. There is no "correct" way to freewrite, so try a variation of these steps: Begin with a blank computer screen and a watch, or the clock on the computer. Try not to use the phone clock, as it can be too distracting. Handwriting is fine too-freewriting involves generating words, not correcting them or getting just the right word. Set a time. Try one, five, or ten minutes. Longer times may not be that productive since free writing is a "warm up" for more focused writing. Begin to type or write about anything that occurs. Don't stop until the time is up. Then review what's written. Do any words stand out? Ideas that might work for the next project? Focused freewriting follows ...

Listing

Imagen
Listing Making a list can help you develop ideas for writing once you have a particular focus. If you want to take a stand on a subject, you might list the top ten reasons why you’re taking that particular stand. Or, once you have a focused topic, you might list the different aspects of that topic. Example: Ways to live a greener life: Use natural cleaning products without propellants Walk or bicycle to places nearby Use recycled products Take public transportation Recycle cans and bottles Use non-life-threatening traps instead of chemical squirrel repellents As you review and work with your initial list, you’ll find yourself revising it by adding or deleting items. Doing an initial list is a quick and useful way to develop ideas for writing. https://owl.excelsior.edu/writing-process/prewriting-strategies/prewriting-strategies-listing/

Clustering

Imagen
Clustering Clustering is a  type of pre-writing that allows a writer to explore many ideas as soon as they occur to them . Like brainstorming or free associating, clustering allows a writer to begin without clear ideas. To begin to cluster, choose a word that is central to the assignment. Clustering What it is:  Clustering is gathering ideas and thoughts into categories. How to use it:  Look at the prompt and determine some big categories that might fall under the topic. Students can write the ideas in circles (like a cluster). It’s helpful to label the clusters or color code them. Use this technique after students have done some brainstorming or freewriting. This will allow them to create categories and pull ideas more easily. Then what:  After clustering students may be ready to start organizing ideas. A simple outline is ideal for this. http...

Brainstorming

Brainstorming Brainstorming Brainstorming provides a nearly guaranteed solution to writer's block. It's actually a very easy process. 1) Begin with a blank piece of paper or blank computer screen. 2) Write the paper's topic, such as "The Ethics of Cigarette Advertising," at the top 3) Write down everything about the topic; omit nothing, no matter how bizarre, and don't stop until completely out of ideas.
